What is Leaky Gut?

Leaky Gut describes a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged (hyperpermeable), causing undigested food particles, toxic waste products, and bacteria to penetrate and enter the bloodstream. These foreign substances invade the bloodstream and can cause autoimmune responses, allergic reactions, skin disorders, and inflammation, both local and systemic, triggering a broad range of diseases.

In addition to “letting the bad things in,” leaky gut may also be “keeping the good stuff out.” Inadequate nutrient density of foods and impaired nutrient absorption into the bloodstream is at the root of a myriad of health problems ranging from hormone imbalance to brain disorders.

What causes Leaky Gut?

Leaky gut can be caused by damage from autoimmune reactions, such as gluten (gliadin) intolerance which destroys the mucosal layer, opens up tight junctions (the space between the cells that make up the intestinal wall), and increases permeability. It can also be damaged by bacterial toxins, food sensitivities in which white blood cells attack undigested food particles, drugs such as antibiotics and NSAIDs, and psychological stress.

How can I find out if I have Leaky Gut?

Leaky Gut can be assessed through the Lactulose/Mannitol test. The two different-sized sugar molecules are excreted in the urine, which reflects absorption from the gut and is a reliable representation of gut permeability. The smaller molecule (mannitol) freely crosses the gut barrier and is a general measure of small intestinal surface area; while the larger molecule (lactulose) is thought to only cross through the small intestine if pores are enlarged or cells are damaged. To assess intestinal permeability, a specific ratio calculation of Lactulose:Mannitol is determined. This ratio is the researched criteria for assessing suspected intestinal permeability.

What’s Included in the Intestinal Permeability (Leaky Gut) Test?

Two urine samples are all that’s required to assess the integrity of your intestinal lining. The first urine sample is taken prior to drinking Lactulose and Mannitol (provided), and the second sample is taken after. Collection cup, Two BD Vacutainer Urinalysis Transfer Straw Kits, ice gel pack, labels, and shipping materials are all provided.
