What you need to know about Detox

Detoxification can sound like an optional and occasional health practice in our society, but in fact it’s an absolutely necessary and daily process within our bodies that we should support and value as much as a healthy diet and regular exercise. We are first exposed to toxins in utero; yes, before we are even born, chemicals find their way into our bloodstream. Then every day for the rest of our lives, we are exposed to air pollutants, endocrine (hormone) disruptors like dioxins, BPA, phthalates, and pesticides, carcinogens like glyphosate (Roundup weed killer) in our parks and playgrounds, and hundreds of other chemicals in furniture, clothes, paints, and personal care products. Unless we live in a bubble, there’s just no way to avoid exposure. So the wisest actions we can take is 1) minimize toxins in the products we use by choosing pure, organic, and naturally-derived products and 2) support our body’s liver and gut with the nutrients they need to efficiently detoxify harmful substances from our body.

Our liver is a detoxification workhorse - it is constantly filtering out toxins from the bloodstream while also producing bile and cholesterol, metabolizing fats, carbs, and proteins, storing and releasing sugar, storing key vitamins, and recycling dead or damaged red blood cells. There are two phases of liver detoxification, each requiring specific nutrients to flow smoothly. Through diet and supplements, we can keep our liver functioning optimally for a lifetime.

Our gut is intimately connected with our liver through the enterohepatic circulatory pathway, or gut-liver axis. After the liver filters blood, it dumps waste products into the gut for removal. But if there is an imbalance in our gut microflora (dysbiosis) or if we have leaky gut (intestinal hyperpermeability), these waste products won’t be properly eliminated. It’s essential that our bowel movements are regular (1 to 2 times every day) and complete so that we effectively rid ourselves of toxins and waste.

The supplements we offer are proprietary nutritional and herbal formulations backed by sound scientific research to support phase 1 and phase 2 liver detoxification, cleanse the gut of pathogenic microbes, correct gut “leakiness,” and optimize the liver-gut detox pathway.
